The role of cardiac MRI in patients with acute myocardial infarction
Abstract
This presentation explores the critical role of Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging (CMR) in the management and evaluation of patients who have suffered an Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI). We will begin by analyzing CMR images from a patient in the recovery phase, approximately three days post-infarction. The presentation will emphasize the role of CMR in identifying ischemic myocardial injury, with a particular focus on the detection of no-reflow phenomena and microvascular dysfunction. The discussion will expand to review clinical evidence supporting the use of CMR in assessing Acute Coronary Syndromes (ACS). Special emphasis will be placed on CMR’s role in evaluating myocardial viability and its implications for clinical decision-making in ischemic cardiomyopathy.
Key sections of the presentation include:
- A comprehensive literature review and analysis of trials assessing myocardial viability and its impact on revascularization decisions.
- A critical examination of existing evidence on the role of viability assessment in specific patient populations, particularly those with chronic stable Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) with low Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction (LVEF) and acute STEMI post-infarction.
- A summary of potential opportunities for future research in this field.
This presentation aims to provide a deeper understanding of how CMR can guide therapeutic strategies in patients with AMI, with the ultimate goal of improving clinical outcomes.
Biography
Mohammad Kasaei is an imaging cardiologist with a special interest in Cardiomyopathies and Heart Failure. With over 10 years of experience in the field, he completed his Doctor of Medicine degree at the Shiraz University of Medical Sciences in Iran and completed his Cardiology residency program at the same institution. He then attended a fellowship course in Cardiovascular Imaging at Shahid Rajaei Cardiovascular and Medical Research Center in Tehran, Iran, where he gained extensive experience in the evaluation and management of a wide spectrum of cardiovascular diseases, including Coronary Artery Diseases, Cardiomyopathies, and Congenital Heart Diseases. He is an experienced Cardiac MRI and Cardiac CT practitioner who has been involved in the management and decision-making of many difficult cases referred by adult and pediatric cardiologists and cardiac surgeons. He has a special interest in the treatment of high blood pressure, lipid disorders, as well as the detection and optimal management of heart failure in its early stages. As an imaging cardiologist and Heart Team member, he provides screening and risk stratification for prevention of cardiac events, manages high blood pressure and blood lipid disorders, and provides emergency care for Acute Cardiac Conditions such as Myocardial Infarction, Heart Failure, and Arrhythmia. He is also experienced in providing standard and guideline-directed care for Ischemic Heart Disease, Heart Failure, and Valvular Heart Disease. He is certified by the Iranian Board of Cardiovascular Diseases and is dedicated to providing high-quality care to his patients.
