Presentation Title:

The effect of COVID-19 on people living with dementia in with cardiovascular diseases in intensive care

Abstract

Intensive care units (ICUs) have specialized multidisciplinary teams dedicated to the management and monitoring of patients with life threatening health conditions. Globally and across the United Kingdom (UK) during the global COVID-19 pandemic, an insignificant number of people living with dementia with cardiovascular disease were admitted to intensive care due to scare medical resources and strict triage systems. This study report findings related to COVID-19 pandemic and ICU decision-making processes from a larger mixed methods study aimed to explore experiences, understanding, and feelings of ICU staff about ICU admissions for people living with dementia within Central England. Individual face-to-face, semi structured in depth interviews were undertaken from two ICUs (adult ICU and cardiac ICU). Audio-recorded interviews were transcribed and analyzed using content analysis. The findings report that during the pandemic, no people with dementia were admitted to either ICU under study because the decision-making processes of who were admitted to ICU were undertaken by others outside ICU and were criteria based, using a strict frailty scoring system. Allocation of limited ICU resources for people with dementia having a diagnosis of COVID-19 was difficult to justify, therefore dementia was overlooked during the pandemic.
